The Autobiography and Sex Life of Andy Warhol

Last week the New York Public Library hosted the re-release of John Wilcock's The Autobiography and Sex Life of Andy Warhol, a collection of his friends "explaining" Warhol, and a panel of many of Warhol's  friends discussed the early years with Andy and their experiences at the "Factory".  Amongst them were Gerard Malanga, Taylor Mead, Gretchen Berg, John Wilcock, and Bibbe Hansen.  Hansen explained Andy Warhol as someone who "wasn’t a person who sat around being interesting. He was interested.” When this book was first published in 1971 it sold for $5 but quickly became a rare book and was offered for sale at prices close to $100.

Celebrate the Solstice

This past Monday 30,000 people came together to celebrate the longest day of the year at Stonehenge.  A celebration of life - standing amongst the towering stones in a diverse crowd of non-stop party goers to neo-pagens to watch the sun rise on the midsummer morning.  Dawn appeared over the Heel Stone just after 4:52 and everyone raised their hands in meditation. There's an amazing communal feeling at the solstice sunrise as the spirituality of the prehistoric temple is celebrated - it brings life to the people.

 There is a new movement going on now... mobile phone photography - and it's bringing surprising results.  I love Misho Baranovic's work which is part of the EYE'EM awards.
EYE'EM is an international team of creative, designers, and developers located in Berlin who love the details in life and capturing them on your cell phone to share with everyone else.
 Also check out  Pixels At An Exhibition held at Rae Douglas’s Giorgi Gallery in Berkeley with amazing pictures, all done on iPhones. No editing on a computer was allowed, and suspect images were checked and removed if found to have been edited elsewhere. Just those amazing real life moments caught on a camera.

Reynold Reynolds

Reynold Reynolds is an artists and filmmaker who uses his understanding of philosophy in his works. I love some of his experimental films reflecting on time, space, decay and the lives of humans that exist within these boundaries. He works primarily with 16mm and Super 8mm film as his medium.

 Juxtapoz photographer, Pieter Hugo, brings to us Nollywood. Nollywood, although you may not be familiar, is believed to be the third largest film industry (after Hollywood and Bollywood, of course). Nollywood is Nigeria's thriving film  where they release about 1,000 movies each year and have created a $263 million industry. Everything is basic, low budget, and "real life" locations, but despite all of this, audiences are captivated by them. Now we can see why... "plots confront the viewer with familiar situations of romance, comedy, witchcraft, bribery, and prostitution. The narrative is overdramatic, deprived of happy endings, tragic. The aesthetic is loud, violent, excessive; nothing is said, everything is shouted."

Jelly Shoes

Jelly Shoes from Opening Ceremony

And indeed there will be time
For the yellow smoke that slides along the street,
Rubbing its back upon the windowpanes;
There will be time, there will be time
To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet;
There will be time to murder and create,
And time for all the works and days of hands
That lift and drop a question on your plate;
Time for you and time for me,
And time yet for a hundred indecisions,
And for a hundred visions and revisions,
Before the taking of a toast and tea.
